The story of cape mayniac
HOW IT STARTED
Cape Mayniac was founded a handful of years ago by Kate Chadwick, a local creative who bottled up the quirky, lighthearted energy of Cape May into one unforgettable name.
HOW I GOT INVOLVED
In the summer of 2024, Kate stopped by Summer Sun Surf Shop to interview me — Dylan, the new owner — for a story about the shop. As we wrapped up, she asked if I’d ever heard of Cape Mayniac.
Of course I had. After years working at It’s A Breeze, Cape May’s go-to for resort wear, I knew the brand well. That’s when Kate told me she was moving back to Pennsylvania — and joked that she couldn’t run Cape Mayniac while living hours away.
THE HAND-OFF
A few weeks (and some serious negotiations) later, she sold me the Cape Mayniac trademark and everything that came with it. Just like that, I became the next chapter in its story.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
Naturally, I did what I know best — created merch. It sold well, but it wasn’t quite the same crowd as my surf shop. So I started looking for the right home for the brand. Then a friend tipped me off to a storefront opportunity, and I jumped on it. That’s where Cape Mayniac is heading next.
WHERE IT'S GOING
Cape Mayniac is becoming Cape May’s general store — a staple for locals, tourists, and anyone who wants a piece of the town to take home. Think small, giftable items with big Cape May energy. I’m also building collaborations with local shops to create products that feel truly “of Cape May.” Because at the end of the day, Cape Mayniac isn’t just a name — it’s a community of people who can’t get enough of this place.
